25th Exeter & East Devon CAMRA
Festival of Winter Ales
The Exeter & East Devon 25th Festival of Winter Ales (FOWA) took place at Exeter City Football Club (ECFC) on the 10th/11th January 2014.
This event which specialises in winter ales was attended by approximately 1500 people over the two days. 72 casks were on offer along with 12 ciders and 2 perries and I’m pleased to say all were drunk.
12 of the 72 were SW Champion Beers of Britain candidates and were judged in a blind tasting on the Friday morning. Need I say that the that the winner of the Barley Wines & Strong Old Ales categories, Beast of Zeal from Wessex was sold out by Friday evening.
Among the many old familiar Christmas favourites were Yo Ho Ho, Whistlemas, Feast of Stephen and Winter Glow to name a few. These were joined by new beers such as John Street Porter, St. Wites Ale and many more.
For the first time in many years the festival had some live music. An accomplished singer from Exmouth (Nigel Challis) strummed away and was well received especially when he ended with a couple of Oasis songs that had the ground floor festival goers singing in harmony. Well maybe just making a lot of noise.
Finally, just like to say thanks to all those that came, all those volunteers that helped, the valuable assistance from the ECFC staff and lastly Simon Hall from BBC’s Spotlight for opening the event.
Looking forward and planning next year’s festival already.
