The Mighty Hop Brewery Presents: 2013 Vallances Stout

The background is that we have a beer recipe from 100 years ago (a long closed-down brewery in Sidmouth called 'Vallances'). It is a stout and was 'rescued' by the DEAD BREWERS SOCIETY.

Few people can remember the Vallances Brewery in Sidmouth. The old building that stood on the junction of Brewery Lane and Temple Street producing it's own ales and stout from 1832 until it closed just after the second World War. However the beer recipes were saved by 'The Dead Brewers Society' and now have been resurrected in partnership with the Mighty Hop Brewery in Lyme Regis.

The recipe sheet in question this time is for 'Vallances Stout' and dates from 1913. All the measuring was in cwt and lb/oz

and temperature in Fahrenheit, but these were quickly transcribed!

Emma Turner the Mighty Hop Brewster has created the 2013 Vallances Stout which has been snapped up by local East Devon Pubs.

Vallances Nut Brown Ale.

This is another 'Dead Brewers Society' Brew, which I know East & West Dorset tried the Vallances Stout when they came over visiting. The Nut Brown ale is 5%, the colour of a polished conker with an initial blast of toffee-apple and has a wonderful ENGLISH hoppy taste. It may be still available in one of the following pubs

    Square & compass, Worth Matravers
    Duke Of Wellington , Wareham
    Digby Tap, Sherborne
    Nags Head, Lyme Regis
    The Grapevine, Exmouth
    The Volunteer, Sidmouth
    The Old Inn Kilmington
    The Bottle Inn, Marshwood.

Summit Pale (Mighty Hop Brewery)
This is our 'summer ale' for this season, and is brewed at a lower alc level of 3.3%. It is American Hopped with Summit which gives a very crisp, piney edge and is very well received on the tastings we have had.

This is also a bit special as it is (hopefully) being adopted as the 'Talbot Tap' in Uplyme's Talbot Arms. Available in:

Tiger Inn, Bridport (Badged as Summit Pale)
Talbot Arms, Uplyme (Badged as Talbot Tap)
