Christmas and Summer Socials

On the evening of 24th July, Otter Brewery welcomed us with opened arms, to enjoy a lovely BBQ, free beer and a tour of the brewery.

As there was so many of us, we were split in to two groups, the first to take the tour and the second to enjoy the delights at the bar as there was a great selection, (Otter Tarka, their new lager, Sheppy's Cider, Otter Amber, Otter Bright, Otter Ale, Otter Bitter and my favourite Otter Head).

It was time and our group went on the tour, guided by Keith the head brewer. We first went and saw the malts that were available, and many of the group tried them to tastes the complexities between barley malt, crystal malt and chocolate malt. We then went to the Copper room, which had large steel vats called Kettles. We continued to a room called the fermenting room and here we saw Otter Velvet frothing up.

We followed Keith to the testing room, where he demonstrated the use of hydrometers and explained the importance of achieving the right ABV before it leaves the brewery in legislation with trading standards. The rain was now coming down, and it was time for us to venture outside to the packing area, before taking a trip into the cellar to see the multitude of casks ready for shipment. Finally we finished up in the despatch area, where Keith explained that on Wednesdays they distribute roughly 400 casks of ale and that's about 28800 pints.

We went back to the BBQ where there were chicken, sausages and homemade burgers on offer, with sauces, salad and rolls and more lovely beer. We continued eating and drinking until it was dark. Alan Cottee presented Keith with a Bronze Award for Otter Bitter for Champion Beer of Britain Southwest Regional 2012/13, which we all cheered and finished on our final drinks before leaving.

Thanks to everyone at Otter brewery, as I am sure everyone had a good time and your hospitality was greatly appreciated.

Below are images from our last Christmas Social (2012) where we went to the Tom Cobley at Spreyton (our 2012 Branch Pub of the Year.)

We had a lovely time and the food as always was delicious. Following a very good Christmas dinner and superb puddings (washed down with plenty of fine real ale of course), we partook in a rather entertaining Christmas quiz run by the lovely Mags, (and three cheers for her) which was all for fun, although she won herself a good supply of custard courtesy of Rodger. Cheers everyone for a great time; looking forward to the summer one.

Christmas and Summer Socials

On Saturday 7th December approximately 47 of us visited The Butterleigh Inn and enjoyed a home cooked carvery with a choice of three meats, (turkey, pork, & beef). To follow there was an endless choice of ice cream, or a delicious apple crumble.

Mags ended the afternoon with the all important 50 question quiz, Three cheers for her.

There was four ales on, and in very good condition, these were Oakham - J.H.B, Cotleigh - Tawny Bitter, Purity - Mad Goose, Dartmoor - Dragon Breath.

A big Thank you to everyone at the Butterleigh and thank you for your hospitality.
